American artist Jonathan Brown makes collage, assemblage and films using found materials.
“I’m always discovering things when making a piece,” he says, “respectful of the roles chance and ‘happy mistakes’ can play. I believe that so much of the creative process is in the revealing of the hidden or unknown. And often humor gets exposed as well.”
Influences include Bruce Conner, Joseph Cornell, Ray Johnson, John Stezaker, Sigmar Polke, Arturo Herrera, Christian Marclay and Peter Schuyff.
Jonathan was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1967 of American parents and soon after moved to Texas. He received his art degree from Austin College in Sherman, Texas in 1990.
In 1994 he moved to Barcelona, Spain where he formed part of the artist co-operative KAOS exhibiting in various galleries and artist markets. Jonathan was co-founder of Los Superocheros, super-8 film projection artists performing at clubs, art spaces and music festivals, using multiple projectors to create a “live” collage of a variety of found footage. His video collages formed a significant part of art culture TV show “Boing Boing Buddha” for several years.
Jonathan made Amsterdam his home in 2003 where he continued creating collage, assemblage and sculpture. His work was featured on book covers as well as cd covers and booklets. Heavily involved with the art collective AWA, Jonathan exhibited his work on a bi-weekly basis for years through the group’s “Beehive Project” at the OT301 Gallery. He enjoyed participating in a number of other group and solo exhibitions throughout Europe. In 2013 his works were included in the official selection of the Spring Exhibition at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen.
Since February 2016 Jonathan has lived in Colorado, USA. He has most recently been making collage-like music videos based on found footage for various bands, while continuing his collage creations.
